castle Heldrungen

Originally as a place of refuge for the inhabitants of the nearby knight's estate the castle construction was built at the end of the 12th century.

From 1512 to 1519 the castle was converted into a Renaisance Water-surrounded castle and a moat and a huge water canal system was built.
After the Peasant's War near Bad Frankenhausen in 1525 the leader of the
farmers Thomas Müntzer was hold as a prisoner here. From the 18th century the fortress lost its importance more and more. In 1974 extensive reconstructions were started. The water-surrounded castle Heldrungen is the only completely preserved fortified castle of its kind built in French style in Germany.
