From
1512 to 1519 the castle was converted into a Renaisance
Water-surrounded castle and a moat and a huge water canal system
was built.
After the Peasant's War near Bad Frankenhausen in 1525 the
leader of the
farmers Thomas Müntzer was hold
as a prisoner here.
From the 18th century the fortress
lost its importance more and more.
In 1974 extensive reconstructions
were started.
The water-surrounded castle
Heldrungen is the only completely preserved
fortified castle of its kind built
in French style in Germany. |
