Imposingly enthroning over the music town is the four-wing castle construction. Architectural styles of several periods shape the home for centuries of the earls, from 1697 on of the Prince of Schwarz-burg Sondershausen. Thanks to large-scale interior works and extensions this place belongs to one of the most beautiful castles of Thuringia.

The Castle Museum is displaying for example pieces from areas like music, history of Schwarzburg, development of the Residency Sondershausen and a natural-history collection. The showpiece of the collection is the "Golden Carriage", a state carriage of the type "grand carosse" manufactured in Paris.
